Animal‘s body structure and joints are quite confusing but we must understand them before life drawing.

For dogs, they use fingers to support their body(not whole hand or foot), so they have one more joint on each legs when compering human. They also have longer shoulder blades which covered from back to their chest sides, which just like another joint between shoulder and arms…

When dogs walking, it looks like their 2 left legs both move forward at same time, when both 2 right legs move back. Actually they are not, there is a small timming gap between 2 legs on one side, a back leg will step earilier than the front leg on the same side.

It also happens when dogs running, but between 2 legs both are front, or both back.

When a leg touches the ground, it moves with the ground as same speed. At the same time, the other leg is still in the air, not moves fast as ground. So, in a frame both legs are at a very similar position, in the next frame they suddenly devided fay away, because the leg on the ground changes its speed immdiantly. That’s how to key the tiny difference of timming between legs. Or they will look like at same move.
